Conclusion to the Brooke story
Written by Erik Scalavino on February 26, 2008 – 4:59 pm -If you caught the end of Tuesday’s “PFW in Progress,” you heard the conclusion of our Saturday-night-in-Indy-with-Brooke story (I thought I’d be able to post this the next morning, but Andy and I were too busy with the final day of Combine access).
Anyway, the young woman named Brooke was our frazzled waitress at Houlihan’s. She was clearly at the end of a double shift, running on fumes by the time we got there, and she didn’t care what she said or how she said it … in a funny way, though. She made fun of us (well, Brian Lowe, mostly) each time she came to the table, and she was relatively cute for a mid-30’s single mother (we learned a lot about this woman in the short time we knew her) … that and her chocolate-milk-induced energy (that’s what she said) made the whole evening more enjoyable considering we were at our sixth choice for restaurants.
I know, I know, you were expecting something more prurient (sorry for the big word, Tom) or laced with double entendre (that’s a French word, Tom), but that’s what happened. If I had posted something the next morning, I may have had specific examples to cite, but hey, that’s what I get for paying more attention to the football side of my job.
Just want to finish by saying overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my first Combine experience (except for the food, of course) and look forward to next year’s, when Tom will hopefully be able to rejoin us.

King George called…said he wanted his English back. I just had to google prurient to only find out how to pronouce the word correctly.
We’re football fans, not Agatha Christie fans….GEEZZZZ!!!!

Tom do they the full results of the workouts posted anywhere? It seems on NFL.com they only list the top performers. I’m really disappointed with the draft coverage from the NFL itself this year. I felt like they did a poor job. If you know of any sites that accurately display the results of all the workouts it would be much appreciated if you could tell me. And preferably a site that does not require a monthly payment to access it (ESPN.com I’m talking about you, yes you who charges people to view content on the web…you’re a sports news site not adult entertainment…)

Wesley.
Try either nfldraftcountdown.com or footballfutures.com. They usually have a lot of stuff. I agree. It shouldn’t be this hard to get information. It’s really sad to be honest with you.

Hey Tom you better check Cason’s 40 time because NFL Draft Countdown has him as a 4.55. It looks they round up by .05 but even still that makes you wonder how accurate the rest of the times are.
February 26th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Thanks Tom. And it looks like the Pats released Colvin. Kind of upsetting I liked him but I knew this was coming, his salary cap number was much too high especially for someone who is injured as often as he has been.
And a 4.55 is still good in my opinion, the difference between 4.45 (considered a good speed) and 4.55 is hardly noticeable. You are talking about .1 seconds which is less than a quarter of a step. Cason’s instincts make up for his “lack” of speed. Tom is right, I’d rather have a guy with Cason’s skill set at 4.55 second “speed” (see my other posts about my view on the 40 yard dash) than a guy with 4.3 speed that lacks instincts (Ellis Hobbs, I hate to pick on the guy because I like him and want him to do well, but he just isn’t a good corner right now).

Hey tom, do you have a account on footballsfuture?
February 26th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Well guys, this is the last thing I will say about Cason. I know you don’t get the prospect tapes like we do but you can check these guys out on Youtube and other places. Watch Cason play corner and return punts and tell me if he looks slow. When I break down the guys on Patriots.com, I always use the phrase, “My eyes tell me how fast he is.” I remember when Deion played for the Cowboys and The Sporting News came out with a story that said he wasn’t even the fastest Cowboy because corner Kevin Mathis was clocked at a 4.24 in the 40. Another Cowboy, receiver Alexander Wright, was supposedly clocked at a 4.19. However, neither of them were close to the speed of Deion on the football field.
Remember, when you hear the term “football speed” it means not only how fast a player can run straight, it also refers to how fast they are coming out of breaks and how quickly they start and stop. That’s the reason why the 40 doesn’t tell the whole story with most of these guys because a majority of the time, football players aren’t running in a straight line. This is the reason I say your eyes will tell you how fast a player is. So, watch Cason and after that if you think he isn’t fast enough to play corner at a high level in the NFL, than that’s your opinion and you’re entilted to it but I would strongly disagree.

Yeah its a free site, there is a forum for each team.

Tom,
footballsfuture.com is free and is great, they have all the combine results in a nice spreadsheet layout, so anyone looking for full results should go there. excellent recommendation. And you are absolutely right about the “football speed” vs. “40 yard dash speed” as I stated in one of my posts I wrote earlier today on one of the other topics.
And Erik, you don’t suck, you were right when you said the running game was back and I disagreed with you, so I guess you do know what you are talking about some of the time. And yes, you are certainly better than Kyle, however Tom is still the champ.
And where was Paul during all of this? Maybe I missed something, did he leave PFW or die or something? I haven’t had a lot of time to listen to PFW in progress lately so did I miss something?

Tom,
Way to go to bat for one of your peers. Defending the weak ones in your herd. We wouldn’t pick on Erika if we didn’t like her. But you have to admit when you blog on a pro football site and use monster words you’re asking to get torched.
Erika,
Tom is right you are the best……..best gay journalist in pro football. I’m sorry for not recognizing that. Keep your chin up; we’ll let up after your rookie year.

I just read that Kevin Faulk was cited for a misdemeanor for possession of marijuana. Just what we need…another wonderful story for the anti-Patriot media to blow out of proportion. I like Faulk, and this won’t change my opinion of him, but hopefully it doesn’t result in any sort of league suspension or other disciplinary actions from the NFL.

Awww, we only make fun of erik because we love him.

Pete Fiutak is an idiot. He claims that Colt Brennan stood out as the top QB at the combine and that Joe Flacco and Chad Henne were “spraying their throws”. What combine did he watch? I didn’t see Colt at all, but I saw Flacco and he was making gorgeous throws all over the place, properly adjusting to the different physiques of the receivers he was throwing to and everything. Flacco is a beast. Pete Fiutak needs to go back to high school ball.

I have officially lost all respect for the NFL network. I watched two videos on NFL.com. The first said Mike Mayock and Charles Davis would discuss who they felt were the big “winners” at the combine. And what did they do? They just said “well I think everyone who came was a winner, there were no losers here.” Thank you NFL Network for wasting 1 and a half minutes of my life.
So then I decide to watch a video discussing all the things happening in the league. The description said they would take a look at the rumors about Randy Moss possibly going to Dallas. So I watch the whole thing, and they did not mention Randy Moss even once. Again I was lied to. Thank you for wasting another 3 minutes of my life.

Here’s something I think we can all rejoice about. Sean Salisbury has finally been dumped by ESPN. At last our long national nightmare is over.

Matt,
Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty, we’re free at last.

Tom- I agree with you football speed is far more important than the 40 speed- Should the NFL modify the combine event to include a sprint including cuts & breaks (i.e. a 40 yard zig-zag course)???
Cheers…!!

Erik,
Post a couple pix of Brooke that appeal to our pruient interests and maybe some of the whiners will cut you a little more slack.
