Quick Kicks: Bodden, Patten in the house
Written by Erik Scalavino on March 17, 2010 – 3:57 pm -Caught up earlier today with newly minted CB Leigh Bodden and old friend WR David Patten, in his second go-round with New England.
Bodden, of course, began by fielding questions about his decision to re-sign with the Patriots after flirting hard with the Houston Texans on the opening weekend of free agency. Among other factors, he credited the chemistry he wanted to continue developing with his New England teammates, as well as the opportunity to compete for a Super Bowl as main reasons why he chose to come back.
He also commented on the likely Patriots/Lions Thanksgiving Day game, in which he’ll face his former teammates in Detroit.
“It would be good to play on Thanksgiving. When I was in Detroit, you know growing up as a kid you watch that game and you want to play on Thanksgiving and I got to do it, but it wasn’t that great in Detroit. So hopefully, if we play on Thanksgiving, hopefully, I can be on the winning end of that.”
Patten, meanwhile, explained that he approached the team about possibly returning late last season, after he’d had time to recover from some training camp injuries while with the Cleveland Browns. But he insisted that All-Pro Wes Welker’s knee injury wasn’t a factor in his eventual return to Gillette.
The affable Patten, who left the Patriots for Washington (and later New Orleans) via free agency after winning three Super Bowls, said he got the itch to play again after watching the Patriots-Saints Monday Night Football affair last November. He proceeded to text message Tom Brady immediately afterward.
“I said ‘Hey man, tell Coach that I still think I have something left if you need some help,’” said Patten.
“The game wasn’t over until around 11:30 and he texted me back at 12, 12:15, and was like ‘Chief, you know if it was up to me, you’d be back.’ I don’t know if that might have sparked a little interest. Here I am and let’s hope for the best.”

Maybe the Patriots should try to get their old trio back also. Patten, Givens, and Branch

Love that Bodden is back. He was the most consistant DB the Pats had last year.
I love what Patten did for the Pats in the past but lets be real here I doubt he makes the team…whats next bringing back Troy Brown. Pats better not whiff on their draft picks or it could be a tough next couple of seasons.

Yup, here he is……WHY? David Patten at one time was a great Patriot, that was 7 years ago, that wouldnt be bad if he was 21 then, but he was 28 then and 35 now! Huge difference in 28 and 35 other than 7 years! He’s got to be put down there with Aiken and Stanback! Old or un-proven! I like Patten, but we can’t always go to the 2001 team or 2004 team for help! Look at Seau, we brought him back not once, but twice! 40 year old Linebacker, granted its Seau but WTF? Enough, spend the cach get some players and win this thing 2-3 more times before Brady gets too old or too hurt! Brady is the key, as always!

I realise this doesn’t belong here, but since you PFW boys go on about it so much (not being able to give offer sheets to RFAs without possessing the correct compensation) I was wondering how this could happen…

It would be good if the Patten signing was only to groom the rookie WR’S ( Brandon Tate) and who ever we draft in 2010, maybe (Golden Tate, Benn or Gilyard). Come this fall Patten will be 36. Most teams worry when their WR’S reach 31.

I have no idea, Ross. I was under the impression, based on info from very reliable, smart sources, that you had to have the pick compensation required in order to sign a RFA to an offer sheet. I’ll look into this and get back to you.

Terbo…
your idea might very well happen deion brach is on the trading block but most expect him to be released..
YOu will not ever see David Givens again he has been out of football for a few years due to chronic knee issues.
He cannot play football even if he wanted too ..

You have to be kidding me. Okay, hold down, Patriots did not pick any free agents or any valuable one and now a sinior citizen as David Patten going to help us to go to the super bowl. hahahaha give me a break very funny. Iam looking foward to watch another super bowl without my favorite team. Hey coach I’ll see you getting fired after next year and you will deserve.

if Patten really is a “senior citizen” in football terms, does he get one of the good parking spaces closer to the building?

Hey Ross the way that the Seahawks got Charlie Whitehurst is not from signing him to an free agent offer sheet, but through a trade. Whitehurst signed his third round tender with the Chargers, making him a Charger again instead of a free agent, then the Seahawks and Chargers worked out a trade for draft compensation. The Seahawks then signed Whitehurst to a 2 year deal for approximately $10 million.

Hey coach. Since we are weak in our linbackers corp. Why don’t we try to bring Bryan Cox? maybe he can get all this players fire up and improve this position.

Patten is great, but honestly he’s 35…I know he’s suppose to be a piece of the puzzle, the piece that Joey Galloway wasn’t…If Patten can make the team and contribute, good for him, but I thought it would have made more sense to bring back Branch who’s slightly younger. Perhaps although Patten is older, his past injuries aren’t as serious or as lingering as Branch’s, you know, if we were gonna walk down memory lane..

Kevin, before the NFL updated that webpage with the final details, it explicitly said the Seahawks offered Whitehurst an offer sheet, which he promptly signed. Then the two teams agreed on compensation as it currently states.

Love Bodden. I can’t believe all the people slamming David Patten. Even if all he does is provide a good influence on some of the younger players it’s still a good move.He doesn’t cost much and they can always cut him later.I can’t believe how many people want to sign Peppers or Bolden or T.O. or Marshall. All of these guys cost a fortune and were disruptive on their teams. Patten deserves some respect just for his history and maybe he does have something left in the tank.

Ooooh-ooh-ooh I love Bryan Cox. He’s tough as nails!
March 19th, 2010 at 4:10 pm
we need some one with a heart loud to get our young players going on D we had a good draft last year get them a dit better on D we need a seasoned coaching staff not this cartoons we have now joff WISE come back to the pats please u r the other half of the puzzle thank u

Pat Mackey…ah good players cost money. Why fans worry about what a player costs is beyond me…the owner is making a killing off this team. So, you think its a bad idea to pay a Boldin or a Marshal and a great idea to pay a Joey Gallowy, a 47 year old David Patten, trade for a Greg Lewis who doesnt make the team, or move up in the draft to get Chad Jackson?

I wonder what Irving Fryer is up to?
March 20th, 2010 at 6:10 pm
Welcome back David, you will bring back some of that magic chemistry. And in New England that means something.
March 21st, 2010 at 7:11 am
Also, it would have been nice to welcome back Charlie and Romeo.
March 21st, 2010 at 7:24 am
i am sure david patten has something left at 35 with a year off to heal , that is the problem with age u dont heal as fast , if they use ihim in limeted role for a year he might make a few big plays
