From the Hart: Tuesday AM walk-through ponderings

The Patriots just completed a morning walk-through on the practice fields behind Gillette Stadium. It marked 26th camp session open to the media. Players wore shorts/sweats/t-shirts and some baseball caps. The practice took place under sunny, very hot conditions.

–As it was a walk-through, the entire roster was on the field for the morning session. One player of note on the field was rookie offensive lineman Rich Ohrnberger, who was carted off the field in the oppressive heat during Sunday afternoon’s session. Wes Welker was also on the field, taking part in the walk-through reps and catching some soft passes from the QBs.

–There was a lot of situational work in the workout including plenty of action in the kicking game. Such specific groups as the onside kick and onside kick return team were put through the reps.

–After the special teams segment the offense and defense went through separate walk-throughs on the two practice fields.

–The two sides of the ball then came together on a single field to close out the practice.

–Since there’s not a ton to blog about from this walk-through I thought I’d offer up an Erik Scalavino quote of the day. Sitting next to me he said, “Grease pops? That doesn’t sound too appetizing.” The hawker in front of us was clearly selling “Freeze pops.” Who in their right mind would think he said, “Grease pops.” Only Erik. I think maybe the heat got to him or something.

–Just a side note, but it seems like Randy Moss and Vince Wilfork are regular pre-practice buddies. The duo often talks during stretching or, as they did today, gets in a little catch with a football before the action heats up. Not sure what to make of the bond, just passing it along. For what it’s worth, Wilfork can catch the ball. I’ve seen him make a good number of one-handed receptions at various times in camp. He might not look like one, but he’s a really good athlete.

–Continuing to try to build his brand, Tom Brady wore his personal logo TB12 hat for the workout.

–Players drawing large groups of media for post-practice interviews included Richard Seymour, Laurence Maroney, Wes Welker and Dan Koppen.

–The team returns to the field Tuesday afternoon at 3:45 for the final public practice session of training camp 2009.
