From the Hart: Tuesday AM walk-through notes

Written by Andy Hart on August 11, 2009 – 11:33 am -

The Patriots just got off the practice field behind Gillette Stadium following the 21st practice of training camp 2009, a walk-through in shorts, t-shirts and baseball caps. The walk-through was just the sixth practice taking place in anything but full-pads this summer, the fourth walk-through of August.

–Tom Brady met with the media following the workout. To summarize many of his thoughts: He is ready to play on Thursday night but hasn’t talked with Bill Belichick about how much action he’ll see. Based on the way Belichick has run camp so far, Brady isn’t exactly expecting the usual first preseason game feel for the game at Philly. As for being on the field for all 21 practices this summer Brady said, “I just feel great. I really do. That’s the decision coach made.” Brady has often taken various practices off in past  years, much like guys like Randy Moss and Stephen Neal have done this summer.

For more from Brady’s post-practice comments check out Patriots.com and Paul Perillo’s all-inclusive Brady story later today.

–Robert Kraft, Jonathan Kraft and representatives of the Massachusetts Lottery are holding a press conference today to announce the official release of the new New England Patriots scratch ticket through the State lottery.

–As usual for walk-throughs, seemingly the entire roster was on the field for the morning workout.

–The session took place under sunny, humid, hot conditions. I mean, it was hot.

–Much of the of the walk-through focused on special teams and situational aspects of the game that could come up on the field in Philly on Thursday night. Typical group and team work came later in the session.

–Team owner Robert Kraft was on the field to watch the morning workout.

–Since it was just a walk-through I have plenty of room for nonsensical notes: Nine geese flew over the practice fields during the workout.

–A staple of the team’s offense in the past, the screen game has gotten plenty of work throughout the summer practice action. Look for a variety of different screen looks to unfold into the regular season, including options for both backs, tight ends and wide receivers.

–Paris Lenon, who’s missed the last two practices, walked off the field following the walk-through wearing a black, surgical stocking on his left calf.

–Offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia, as he so often does during training camp, did his own workouts following the conclusion of the walk-through. Clearly one of the hardest working coaches in the NFL in terms of his job, the New England coaching legend puts in an equally impressive effort maintaining his health through his regular post-practice summer workouts.

–Talking about new WR target Greg Lewis, Brady said the former Eagle has, “very good all around skills.” Those have shown up in camp through his reps both on the outside and in the slot in a variety of personnel groupings. He’s worked with Randy Moss and Wes Welker as well as other groups of lesser-established targets. It looks like Lewis’ versatile skills could make him an option for a variety of roles in the offense as he gets more comfortable in his new offense.

–The team will return to the field again this afternoon at 3:45 PM for the final public/media workout before heading to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles.

  4. Ronnie G Says:

At least Lenon isn’t sporting a knee brace…

Is this afternoon’s practice a full pads session?

  5. carlos Says:

I’ve never been more excited about the preseason and about geese as I am right now.

  6. Craig from Boxborough Says:

Were the geese in the classic v-formation?

Lewis-Moss-Welker-Nunn-Baker-Galloway…Just how are opposing D’s gonna stop New England’s air raid ????Good luck with that !….

  8. Philip in Pompano Says:

Sooo whats the ‘feel’ you get from the players in this camp vs. past years. I mean.. like when Moss showed up 2 years ago there was all kinds of energy & charge from the press, from you guys and from the players in camp. I know having Brady back has cranked that up this camp but do you get any gut feeling from the players how this camp may have something extra in store on both sides of the ball ?

  9. Andy Hart Says:

It was 9. I’d bet Erik’s job on it.

  10. Andy Hart Says:

They didn’t start out in the classic formation, a little sloppy for my liking this early in camp. But they came together nicely as they flew over and beyond the far end of the practice fields.

  11. todd in nova scotia Says:

andy , any idea what the percentages were last year , defenseive snaps in 3-4 vs 4-3 vs nickel ? i’m not buying we are going to see less 3-4 this year .

  12. Craig from Boxborough Says:

If Matt Light had a shotgun would he have taken a shot at the geese?

  13. Andy Hart Says:

Todd: Last year it was 67.3% 3-4 to 32.7% 4-3.

To the dismay of many, this year we are seeing approximately 41.78% of the base defensive formations as 4-3.
