From the Hart: Stars and the stripes hit morning practice
Written by Andy Hart on August 5, 2009 – 12:40 pm -The Patriots just concluded the 13th practice of training camp 2009 on the practice fields behind Gillette Stadium, the 11th workout in full pads. Beyond the normal Patriots stars in attendance, also on the fields were former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, NFL Network’s Mike Mayock, ESPN reporter Adam Schefter and a crew of NFL officials in town to work with the team over the next couple days. The officials will address the media in the Gillette press box following Bill Belichick’s late-morning press conference.
–Those players not seen on the field for the Wednesday morning workout included: Jonathan Wilhite, Shawn Springs, Tedy Bruschi, Al Johnson, George “Bus” Bussey, Ryan O’Callaghan, Vince Wilfork, Benjamin Watson, Le Kevin Smith, Myron Pryor, Richard Seymour and Tully Banta-Cain; NFI rookie Brandon Tate; injured, unsignded rookie Tyrone McKenzie; and PUPers Rich Ohrnberger, Mark LeVoir, Ty Warren and Shawn Crable.
Rookie defensive lineman Darryl Richard made his first appearance on the field after opening camp on PUP.
Wilfork had said earlier in the week that his wife was due with the couple’s third child today, Aug. 5.
Belichick did say that for the most part the guys that are not practicing are “pretty close.”
–Shanahan once again watched the workouts closely, although he also spent time chatting on the side with Patriots owner Robert Kraft.
–Mayock also watched from the sidelines between the practice fields. He spent time after practice chatting with Matt Light and Adalius Thomas, seemingly getting into some heavy football talk about life on the “edge” in the NFL.
–Schefter, somewhat like Shanahan, is also making a tour of NFL camps. He also taped an interview with Paul Perillo and Fred Kirsch that will air on Thursday during PFW in Progress on Patriots.com radio. He also has a new book out that delves into the best speeches of all time from the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.
–Practice ended in mock controversy with the two sides once again battling on one last play with a lap on the line. Brian Hoyer found Randy Moss across the back of the end zone for the score on the play. But somehow, the offense ended up running a lap, although Brady and Co. ran with their hands in the air in celebration, turning it into more of a victory lap than a punishment lap. Moss did kick the ball into the air and the stands after the catch, possibly earning a penalty and the lap. After practice Light seemed confused about why the offense had to run despite scoring for the second straight day, blaming it on a bad call by an official, one who looked curiously like Bill Belichick.
–Andrew Walter spoke with the media after practice, drawing a large crowd. He spent a lot of time about just being a professional and doing his job in his early days in New England.
–Shun White, Terrence Nunn and Matthew Slater work on gunner reps while the rest of the wideouts run through receiver drills early in practice with Nick Caserio and Chad O’Shea. Caserio continues to work with a very hands-on style with the WRs, doing a lot of working throwing the ball, hitting them with bags, etc.
–The team continues to do open-field tackling drills every day, more often than I can remember in previous camps. The drill also has had the tacklers bringing the ball carriers to the ground, something that rarely happened, if at all, in the past. Fred Taylor was once again the star of the drill as a ball carrier, putting a move on Brandon Meriweather that left the safety flat-footed and unable to even get a hand on the experienced running back.
–It might just be me, but Dean Pees seems to be a bit more vocal in this camp than I can remember from previous years. It seems that it’s even taken a bit of toll on his voice, as he sounded a bit hoarse on Wednesday.
–Tom Brady continues to struggle to get on the same page with first-year Patriots tight end Chris Baker. Brady looked for Baker down the right seam this morning and once again overthrew him by a couple yards. He still seems to be getting a feel for the veteran’s speed/stride, etc. Remember, the two stayed out late after practice earlier in camp to work one-on-one.
–The Terrence Nunn story seems to be catching on. He continues to shine in workouts and was questioned by a large media crowd after practice. Belichick was asked about Nunn, who was out of football last year. The former Nebraska player attended the school’s pro day this past spring and he believes that’s how he was lucky enough to get a second shot at the league after getting overlooked last year. Belichick said he thought Nunn was the all-time receptions leader for the Cornhuskers. It really is an amazing story that a guy like that was not at least in a camp last summer. Wow! I still think he has a real shot to make this team based on not only how he’s looked at WR, but also the reps he’s been getting as a returner and gunner.
–During team work quarterbacks coach Bill O’Brien had a walkie-talkie in hand to call in the plays to the quarterbacks. It did not appear that Pees was doing the same with the defense.
–Sam Aiken has been throwing his body around with a few pops in recent practice action, including a hit on Laurence Maroney during kickoff/kickoff return work.
–The quarterbacks and running backs worked on a lot of inside handoffs both in group drills and team action.
–I’m sure I missed one or two, but I saw Moss drop a pass for the first time this morning. It was also Moss’ third morning workout of camp.
–With all the returning starters on the field, the offensive line taking reps following that group on Wednesday included, from left to right, Sebastian “Sea Bass” Vollmer, Dan Connolly, Ryan Wendell, Billy Yates and Wesley Britt. There has been a lot different groupings along the line to date in camp, especially on the inside.
–Brady hit Joey Galloway on an in-cut in one drill, with the veteran running into safety Matthew Slater. It might have been a real knock-out shot in a game setting.
–Getting into the action, the officials flagged the offense for a false start in one team drill. Adalius Thomas then got nailed for an offsides later in team work. He was immediately removed from the drill and sent on a penalty lap.
–As he works into the system, Mike Vrabel look-a-like, Rob Ninkovich has gotten some decent reps, including many in the red area and on the goal line.
–Darius Butler had a pass defense in the end zone on a Brady throw intended for Wes Welker crossing under the goal posts.
–Adalius Thomas had a near pick at the line of scrimmage on a Brady quick throw at the line intended for Galloway. Thomas ended up batting the ball down from his left outside linebacker spot.
–Mike Richardson got some extended reps late in practice at right cornerback in the red area and on the goal line. Leigh Bodden, who’s take nearly all his reps at that spot, was on the sidelines throughout the work on one knee.
–Working on some goal line plays the offense worked on two of it plays of choice in those short-yardage situations in the past – direct snaps to the running back and a QB sneak.
–As has been the case in recent days, Brian Hoyer continues to get a good number of reps working after Brady. Although it seemed that the reps were more evenly split between the three backups on Wednesday.
–Those drawing large crowds of media after practice included Light, Walter, Nunn and others.
–The Patriots will return to the field at 3:45 this afternoon for yet another workout. With potential weather moving into the area, the public is asked to check Patriots.com for any last-minute changes/updates to the practice schedule.

Wow Andy! That has to be your longest report to date. Thanks for breaking things up into bit-sized bits. I makes reading easier for sure.
Are Hoyers’ increased reps a result of perhaps some promising performance to date? With preseason game one a little over a week away I’m wondering how much game time Hoyer will get at QB?
Nunn is this year’s Guyton. Can’t wait to see this kid play the way your talking him up. Same goes for the new backfield too.

One more thing. Gotta love the way Fred Taylor is still showing some moves out there. Not bad for an old man!

Soo Andy how is the Sea Bass progressing esp at left tackle ? A fish out of water or smart enough not to get hooked off the line ?

Lotsa open-field tackling drills are probably a really good thing, especially for Meriweather.
BB mixed up the O-line a lot in last year’s camp and pre-season games, throwing in a lot of different combinations and even having regulars playing out of position - one of the reasons, I thought at the time, that Cassell seemed so ineffective. And I think this is still at least partly in reaction to the problems the O-line had when Neal went out during the Superbowl - just making sure that the guys are prepped for almost any contingency.

He’s looked OK. He certainly has gotten some good reps, including filling in for Light at times. I watched him for a couple snaps in a row yesterday and came away with just a blah reaction. He didn’t kill anyone on two plays run right behind him. The first, he actually lost his man after initial contact the running back had to make a move in the backfield as a result. The second he came out a little high and didn’t exactly kill the defender, Steve Williams if I remember correctly. Sea Bass looks the part. I think early on he’s going to struggle with staying low on running plays in order to get enough power to move NFL tackles and ends. Maybe he’ll add weight down the line to help in that area. He certainly isn’t fat, I’ll say that much. Dude is very impressive physically. Beyond what I say, though, I think the reps he’s getting and the praise he’s received from Belichick are worth much more. He’s very much worth watching at this point. At the very least it looks like he could start the season as the team’s swing tackle, especially with Mark LeVoir on PUP.

Good Morning,
I attended the practice on Wednesday morning and It was AWESOME !!! Randy Moss punted the ball into the crowd after he scored and I caught it off a tip. I was baffled when a Patriots Staff member came to me and demanded me to return the ball to him. With all the money in pro football you could’ve let me keep the ball - Randy would have paid for it & I was weraing a Moss Patriots jersey - Go Figure.
