Quick Kicks: Day 5 morning notes

Written by Erik Scalavino on August 3, 2009 – 12:55 pm -

Halfway through the Monday session, as Belichick’s press conference just wrapped up. It was HOT out there today. Blistering sun and no breeze whatsoever.

Attendance went as follows: Wilhite, Springs, McKenzie, Bruschi, Johnson, Neal, Bussey, O’Callaghan, Moss, Watson, Le Kevin Smith, Pryor, and Seymour were all out. All six list players were absent as well: Tate, Ohrnberger, LeVoir, Richard, Warren, and Crable.

On to the notables:

* Rookie WR Terrence Nunn is having himself a nice start to this camp. He continues to make very impressive catches both in drills and live action. Team PFW is keeping a sharp eye on this kid.

* Red Zone was an emphasis today. The play of the day was made by Greg Lewis. Brady targeted him in the left corner of the end zone, while Lewis was covered by James Sanders and Leigh Bodden. But Brady lofted the ball to the only place Lewis could get it — over both defenders’ heads in the direction of the back pylon. Lewis extended nicely to haul in the pass.

* On the next play, Brady tried to hit TE Chris Baker in the same spot, but 12 overthrew his wide open target.

* Sammy Morris had a pair of great back-to-back plays. He took a handoff to the right side and with some great blocking in front of him barrelled into the end zone. TE David Thomas pancaked rookie safety Pat Chung on the play.

* On the following play, running in the same direction, the hole closed quickly, but Morris saw it coming and cut inside, again making it to the end zone.

* WR Joey Galloway was lined up one-on-one against rookie corner Darius Butler. Galloway turned inside, then quickly reversed course and went outside. Butler bought the fake, giving Galloway a sizeable opening. Brady saw it, but fired his pass too wide. Galloway made a valiant attempt to dive for it, but he couldn’t hang on.

* At one point in the next red zone series, Brady and center Dan Koppen fumbled the exchange, so the duo was forced to take a lap around the field.

* Later, tackle Matt Light committed a false start and also took a jog around the field.

* Leigh Bodden continues to have a solid camp, lining up mostly at right corner.

* All-Pro kicker Stephen Gostkowski had two rare misses at the end of practice. He made five of his seven attempts from the 30-40-yard range, but missed his first kick with long snapper Nathan Hodel, then his first attempt when Hodel was replaced by rookie Jake Ingram. Both errant kicks sailed wide right.

EriK, i love your story’s man but you guys have gotta start pressing the whole crable issue. I want to know why hes not practicing and how close is he to a return. Also im curious on pfw’s take on bruschi’s camp thus far. he isnt getting any younger and would like to know how hes doin thus far. He’s one of my favorite players i just wanna make sure he still keeping himself competitive.

Erik…Thanks for the report. I’m interested in Nunn, and see he is having a nice camp so far. Given he was out of football in 2008, does he have practice squad eligibility? based on what you have seen so far, how do you stack him against Edelman?

  3. Pat in FL Says:

Hell ya, Michael! Crable’s presence on PUP is not as concerning to me as the lack of reports coming out as to why. This can only mean bad news to the tune of serious injury, or at least starting the year on PUP which puts him out of play the first six weeks.

What’s up PFW. Are you willing or just not CR-able?

  4. Ronnie G Says:

Erik, nice report once again. Was Vollmer in on those Morris runs? BB seems taken by his versatility to play LT or RT. At the very least, Vollmer looks to solidify a roster spot if not outright playing time–his preseason play may decide that. Same goes for Nunn and with the spectre of injury always looming you have to figure that some of these prospects are going to get an injury oppportunity. You hate for anyone to get hurt but it’s a reality, so having these long shot prospects excel in camp is always good to hear. Brady isn’t your Superbowl XXXVI MVP if Bledsoe stays healthy that year.

Can’t wait for that first preseason game.

Is Dave Thomas making a case for himself in camp? I don’t know if pancaking Chung on a run play means anything but its going to be a “nice” problem for BB choosing his TE’s with all this talent fighting for a roster spot.

Looking forward to the next report.

Uh-oh, Chung being pancaked by Dave Thomas? Hope thats just a one off. Don’t want another Brandon Meriweather on our hands.

  6. Andrew Says:

Remember last year at this time when Tom Brady and Matt Light were having a drink because Jason Taylor left the div. How many you think they had when they found out heeesss baaack. But hopefully not in his old self.

  7. todd in nova scotia Says:

who would you compare Nunn too ? is he a slot guy or a down the field receiver?

  8. bryce Says:

  9. bryce Says:
