From the Hart: Tuesday OTA action!
Written by Andy Hart on June 9, 2009 – 1:25 pm -The final OTA passing camp just concluded on the rainy, cold fields behind Gillette Stadium. The team, fresh of yesterday’s beautiful, relaxing action at the team’s Charitable Foundation Golf Tournament, spent just under an hour and a half on the field in shorts/pants, helmets and jerseys. The conditions were pretty tough as players, especially skill guys, got plenty of reps working in the windy, rainy, slick conditions.
Here are one man’s observations from the cold practice fields:
–Unofficial attendance had 74 players on the field, including 29 on defense and 44 on offense. The 15 players not seen on the field included Vince Wilfork, who was in attendance at yesterday’s golf tournament but has otherwise remained absent from the voluntary OTA action. Adalius Thomas, who had been at previous OTA sessions, was another notable absentee. The others not on the field were Tyree Barnes, Shun White, Brandon Tate, Brandon Meriweather, Sammy Morris, Mike Richardson, Ray Ventrone, Brandon McGowan (another newcomer to the absentee list), Jerod Mayo, Tyrone McKenzie, Mark LeVoir, Ty Warren and Jarvis Green.
–We got our first chance to see Patrick Pass, wearing No. 32, back in practice action for the Patriots in his second tour with the team. Pass drew a large crowd of media in post-practice interviews. Look for plenty of Pass stories in tomorrow’s papers. He seemed excited to be back with the team and in the NFL after being out of the league last year. He was living with his family in North Providence, R.I. He said he had not given up on the idea that he’d get back into the NFL at some point.
–Tank Williams continues to work in his hybrid safety/linebacker role. He worked with the linebackers during positional drills early in practice. He then got plenty of reps at and near the line of scrimmage in sub defensive packages in work defending the pass.
–Did I mention that it was cold and rainy? Felt more like December than June! Thankfully the Patriots P.R. department did a great job passing out a few umbrellas for the writers to use. I don’t generally use an umbrella, but I was more than happy to use one on this day.
–During punt return work Kevin Faulk, Wes Welker and Joey Galloway were back deep fielding balls. They also worked catching punts while holding another ball in their hands. Given the already challenging wet conditions it wasn’t surprising to see all three struggle at various points in the drill.
–Chris Hanson took plenty of reps with both snappers working on holds for field goals. It’s another area in which the wet conditions made things challenging. The focus was even more intense at the end of practice when the team worked on running the field goal unit on the field for a end-of-half attempt.
–During one segment Tully Banta-Cain, Shawn Crable, Vince Redd and Pierre Woods worked off to the side specifically on different pass rush drills.
–Eric Alexander continues to get a lot of reps, many alongside Tedy Bruschi, at inside linebacker in various defensive packages.
–Kevin O’Connell clearly continues to work on his touch and accuracy, especially on short throws at or behind the line of scrimmage. For some reason his really short throws often tend to be below the waist of the intended target. Matt Gutierrez also seems to need some work on his touch on the shorter throws. He seems to put too much zip on the ball on some attempts, with one sailing swiftly ahead of and past Faulk on one particular rep on Tuesday.
–Here’s a scary thought for opposing defensive back – Randy Moss, Wes Welker and Joey Galloway all lined up together in a trips formation on one side of the field. Two deep threats and the game’s best underneath target with Tom Brady analyzing the matchup and picking apart the defense! The defenders will have to be on-point in there communication or they could get embarrassed with that one.
–Darius Butler stepped in front of Greg Lewis to pick off a Brian Hoyer pass on an in-cut in group work. Butler has been up-and-down at points in OTA work, but he’s gotten his hands on the ball on a pretty regular basis.
–Both sides of the ball worked on some hurry-up, no-huddle stuff over the second half of the morning workout.
–With Larry Izzo gone, Sam Aiken looks like the potential replacement at fullback or personal protector in front of Chris Hanson on punts.
–With Adalius Thomas not on the field Pierre Woods and Shawn Crable spent the bulk of the workout opposite each other taking advantage of the opportunity for a few extra reps.
–The funnies play of the day came when Gutierrez hit Moss crossing the back of the end zone for a touchdown. After the reception Moss attempted to celebrate by dunking the ball over the crossbar. Unfortunately for him, he was blocked by the crossbar as he didn’t quite elevate enough for the dunk. The failure drew quite a bit of heckling from Moss’ teammates. The heckling continued when he dropped the ball on the following pass thrown his way.
–Those two plays aside, Moss had a nice workout. Even in the rain and cold he made catching the ball look as easy as ever. There isn’t much that’s prettier than a Brady-to-Moss slant.
–Tyson DeVree may have had the catch of the day for the second straight OTA session. I say may, because there is some question to whether he brought the ball down in bounds while falling/sliding to the turf in the far left corner of the end zone. At about 100 yards away I couldn’t tell, but either way DeVree made a nice one-handed grab and has looked good catching the ball in OTA work this spring.
–As he does so often in training camp work, Alexander stood under the goal posts during field goal work to serve as the official and call whether the kicks were good or not.
–Due to the rain, the post practice interviews were moved under the ramps inside Gillette Stadium at the conclusion of practice. Those players drawing interest from the media included Matt Light, Patrick Pass, Joey Galloway, Greg Lewis, Richard Seymour, Benjamin Watson, Alex Smith, Tully Banta-Cain and a few others.
–Did I mention it was cold out there today?
–Much has been made of Paris Lenon’s weight since he joined the team so I asked him about it after practice today. Lenon played at 230 in his time in Detroit’s Tampa 2 scheme, a weight he had to work to get down to. He’s now weighing in at a more natural 238. Either way he doesn’t think his size is an issue as, “ball is ball.” He’s also proud of the fact that even though he worked to play at a lighter weight with less bulk in recent years that he never missed a game and hasn’t missed a practice, by his estimation, in five years. I think he’s going to be a nice fit. He might not be ideal in terms of size, but he’s got a nice build. I’m interested in seeing him in action in pads when training camp and the preseason action hits.
–Now that OTAs have come to an end, the Patriots are scheduled to return to the field Wednesday morning for the team’s mandatory, three-day veteran mini-camp. Practices – which are closed to the public but open to the media – are scheduled to run from 11-12:30 on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Player interviews will take place after practice on all three days, with Bill Belichick meeting with the meeting coming off the field on Wednesday and Friday.

I’ve read this a couple of times Andy, but still not sure what the weather was like today?

like to see some version of the wildcat implemented into the O this year !! at the very least a flea flicker or some trickery that exploits our speed….

Yeah Matt, I agree. I’m concerned about the lack of Mayo on this OTA Sandwich.

Yeah, I too want to know why Mayo hasn’t been there. You guys ran a story about how dedicated he is to football and yet he apparently hasn’t been attending the OTA’s. I’m not trying to rip the guy because he is one of my favorite players, but what the heck is going on???
