From the Hart: Blast from the Pass!

Written by Andy Hart on June 5, 2009 – 9:09 am -

The Patriots re-signed running back Patrick Pass on Thursday. The team also announced the release of DL Kenny “Big” Smith, LB Angelo Craig, RB Omar Cuff and S Marcus McClinton.

I like the Pass move, although I’m not saying he’s a lock to make the roster or anything like that. In his best days as a Patriot Pass was a very versatile player for the team. He could serve as a backup running back with the ability to run the ball and catch it out of the backfield. He can serve as an occasional fullback with the abilty to both block and run the ball from that position. He’s also a very good special teams guy both in terms of coverage, blocking and as a backup kick returner.

In fact his tools are very similar to those that Heath Evans displayed for the team in recent years before signing with the Saints as a free agent this offseason. It wouldn’t be a shock to see Pass slide right back into that role vacated by Evans. Of course it also wouldn’t surprise me to see him cut in camp. I’m just saying, in terms of versatile competition for training camp and preseason action I like the move. I also recall him as one of the nicest guys in the locker room.

Welcome back, Patrick. Also, I’m trying to get past and forget the time you dropped the ball to reach back for an apparently pulled hamstring. Time heals all wounds. Your hammy healed. I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt and don’t think you’ll ever simply drop the ball again for an injury. At least fall to the ground and let the whistle blow first.

Again, welcome back to New England!

Does Pass end up on the final 53-man roster, replacing Evans? Let us know what you think with a comment below!

I think Pass is perfect for the role vacated by Evans although I’m still fuming they cut a fellow Cuff. I was looking forward to seeing a Patriots jersey with Cuff on the back. Nevermind, I’ll have to keep training hard or get Flanders to make one up for me and pay the ridiculous shipping costs ;).

  2. Paul, London Says:

Spells bad news for the Lawfirm though. Shame as he done everything that was asked of him.

I don’t think Pass will make the roster though. He could be completely out of gas as a player or just suck. Alternatively, he could add something to the team especially Special Teams wise.

  3. Hank Says:

WELCOME BACK PASS! I still remember your catch from Brady when he fell on his ass.

  4. todd in nova scotia Says:

its funny but no matter how much good patrick pass does in the league, he will always be the guy who fumbled the ball grabbing his hamstring like he had been shot .

  5. bryce Says:

nah-he had his shot once upon a…time to bring in someone younger or proven player @ fullback…

  6. Damian in Santa Cruz Says:

I can’t see the position being left vacant, and if my memory serves me correct, Pass is now the only legitimate FB on the squad. There are a couple of other players that we’ve talked about filling in for situational plays at FB, but I’m sure coach Belichick will probably like to keep at least one true FB on the roster.

    NO

I think the Patrick Pass signing is a good one especially seeing as how Fred Taylor cant catch the ball for crap. i know we have Kevin Faulk for that , but we could always use another pass Catcher out of the backfield. Also seeing as how Heath Evans is no longer with the team he would be perfect in that situation even though the Patriots rarely use the Full back unless its around the goal line

  9. Alex from Panama Says:

i’m good with russ hochstein coming on the field as a fullback in big formations to plow over poor helpless defensive players.. i think he did a good enough job last year… anyways, if he gets hurt, i’m sure we’ll be able to pick up pass mid-season, so there you go.. good to see pass back, but won’t be here for long

  10. Joe Says:

I cringed when I heard this. My first thought was the play Andy mentioned where he dropped the ball to grab his hamstring. Not to be cruel or a hater, but in this case, I feel he’s training camp fodder, and I hope he will be cut. Each RB on the roster gives me more faith, and peripheral special teams guys are a dime a dozen.

  11. Keith Says:

Patrick Pass are you kidding me!! This guy had his shot and never cut it.

  12. joeyjoejoe Says:

Patrick Pass not good football player. Patrick Pass fall down like little girl.

  13. JMC Says:

I always liked Pass, but would have rather had Lamont Jordan for this year.

  14. Hunter Says:

Fullback? Are you kidding? 5′10 and 217lbs does not equal fullback. That was an experiment that didn’t work. I’d rather the position be left vacant and an extra WR, RB, or CB be left on the roster for special teams. This guy is a joke.

  15. darius Says:

Coach Belichick made that desicion so let him do his job. Pass must be good if Belichick resigned him back on the patriots.

    Go Patriots 16-0 this year

  16. Damian in Santa Cruz Says:

Ummmm…I guess I have to recant. I guess Pass failed. I just read that he was released. He didn’t even make it to training camp!!
