Bodden ranked 15th best NFL CB

Written by Andy Hart on May 27, 2009 – 11:36 am -

First-year Patriots cornerback Leigh Bodden is ranked as the 15th best cornerback in the NFL heading into 2009 according to RealScouts, Sporting News’ team of former NFL scouts.

Oakland’s Nnamdi Asomugha took the top spot on the list with Tennessee’s Cortland Finnegan coming in second, both ahead of the guy often perceived to be the best cover man of his era — Denver’s Champ Bailey. Interestingly, former Patriots corner and current Eagle Asante Samuel trails just after Bailey, coming in at fourth on the list.

Bodden, who could help the Patriots fill the void left by Samuel’s free agent departure following the 2007 season, is expected to bounce back from a tough year in Detroit last fall. Here’s what RealScouts wrote in their assesment of Bodden, ranking him just behind Green Bay’s Charles Woodson and just ahead of Indy’s Kelvin Hayden:

“Bodden is big and fast and a strong player near the line, both as a press corner and in run support. Though he struggled last year in Detroit, he’ll be a superior player in Bill Belichick’s system.”

What do you think of Bodden, who’s expected to start for New England? Is he a true No. 1 NFL corner? Will he excel in Belichick’s scheme, as he did to some degree two year’s ago under Romeo Crennel? Will he help you forget Samuel and Ty Law? Let us know with a comment below.

    where was Hobbs ranked?

i just wish Bodden was signed for more than this season.

  2. todd in nova scotia Says:

15th ummm ok , i was thinking he was going to have a hard time to get playing time with all the young guys

  3. the mullet Says:

The Pats reportedly offered him a 4 year $16 million contract so Bill obviously thinks pretty highly of him.

  4. GR365 Says:

I hope he plays like he did 2 years ago and not like last year. Considering, how well he did play for Romeo. He should contrubte right away.
Was Deltha O’neil on that list?

  5. Dorian Roberts Says:

Hobbs is not even a top 20 corner. He played as bad as Deangelo Hall and the other scrub O’Neal we picked up.

    Ellis Hobbs
    Targeted: 43 times
    Yards allowed: 339
    YPA: 7.88
    Incompletions forced percentage: 34.88%

This was halfway through the year and these numbers are very far from good.

Bodden and Springs to start the season off. More than likely at one point Springs gets hurt and loses his spot to Butler or Wheatley.

Unless Butler really shines in training camp its going to be Bodden and Springs. Bodden was considered a top 10 corner and rising less than 2 years ago. What happened? The tampa 2 happened and he played for a garbage team.

    @John
with all due respect, your list is garbage… what the hell is Finnegan (WAAAAAAAAAY overrated), bodden, david, and springs doint in the top 10!?!?

have you ever seen Nate Clements, Antonio Cromartie (hurt last year), Darrelle Revis, Sheldon Brown play?? they are borderline elite along with asmougha, bailey, woodson, hall (sometimes), samuel, hayden i would call tier 3…

  8. what? Says:

Ha. Jason David? You must be joking. Revis is pretty good. What happened to Nate Clements?

  9. Mike Preckol, NH Says:

Bodden and the rest of the secondary need to be solid this season to make up for what will be an average at best pass rush. Teams will most likely be passing often against us, due to the leads that Brady and co. will provide. But what it most lacked a season ago was some sort of play-making ability in the secondary. I think Bodden can be that guy, i also think that between the rest of the young players Whilite, Wheatley, Butler, Meriweather and Chung.

  10. Fred Says:

Asomungha and Champ are 1 and 2 and far ahead. The rest are up and down year 2 year and depending on the sceme and team they are on. Bodden is solid for the money Springs is washed up. Rookie corners struggle so look for bodden on one side and a rotation on the other.

  11. Erich from Haverhill Says:

Bodden can stay at number 15 for now and he will move up week after week.
