From the Hart: Passing thoughts from OTAs

Written by Andy Hart on May 20, 2009 – 1:59 pm -

We just finished up our first portion of voluntary organized team activities that was open to the media, something we often refer to as “passing camp.” There were 48 players on the field in shorts, jerseys and helmets, including 21 on defense and 27 on offense. The weather was great. Sunny, warm and not too windy. The session lasted just about two hours and concluded with the full team doing a series of conditioning runs. Here are some of my initial thoughts on the workout…

–Notable veterans in attendance included Kevin O’Connell, Terrence Wheatley, Matthew Slater, Fred Taylor, Tank Williams, Antwan Spann, Vince Redd, Eric Alexander, Al Johnson, Ryan O’Callaghan, Alex Smith, David Thomas, Kenny “Big’ Smith, Tully Banta-Cain, Chris Baker and Shawn Crable. The bulk of the rookie class was on the field save for a few rookie free agents (Shun White, Tyree Barnes, Eric Kettani) and injured draft picks Brandon Tate and Tyrone McKenzie. Some newcomers not in attendance included Joey Galloway, Greg Lewis, Leigh Bodden and Shawn Springs. For the record, as expected, Tom Brady was not on the field.

–O’Connell took plenty of reps at quarterback, leading the work in most drills. He threw some very nice intermediate passes, but to me looks to continue to struggle with his shorter throws. It’s almost as if his accuracy decreases the shorter the throw is. I thought Brian Hoyer was OK in his attempts and still think he could very well battle for the third QB slot.

–Fred Taylor, a 12th year veteran, was the elder statesman on the field for the workout. He paced a group of running backs that also included BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Omar Cuff. Taylor showed no limitations of the reported wrist injury he suffered earlier this offseason. He met with the media after the practice and said he was on the field to help speed up the process of him getting acclimated to the team.

–It was good to see Shawn Crable and Vince Redd on the field for the work. I thought Crable did a really nice job in pass coverage on a number of reps, something that probably doesn’t come too easy for the 6-5, 243-pounder. Redd didn’t get as many reps as Crable in the group work that I saw. Both players spoke with the media after practice, each one discussing how they spent the offseason working on their strength.

–Wheatley and Sam Aiken did a little rolling around on the ground fighting for the ball after one play down the middle of the field. It looked like Wheatley had the pick but then the veteran took the ball away on the way to or on the ground. It was the most heated play of the day.

–Patriots owner Robert Kraft watched the morning session, wearing a suit on the sidelines. Floyd Reese was also on the sidelines watching the action. Nick Caserio was on the field working with the offense (mostly receivers and quarterbacks) in various drills as he is wont to do this time of year.

–I also talked to free agent wide receiver Terrence Nunnn after practice. Nunn was out of football last year after concluding a pretty productive career at Nebraska. He never got any calls for tryouts or to sign a rookie free agent contract last summer. He was working in a Houston area gym this spring when Caserio called to bring him in for a workout that led to his signing with New England. He doesn’t have the answer to how he slipped through the cracks a year ago. I just don’t get it. It’s a weird story, or lack of a story. I’m pulling for him to make the practice squad.

–Early word on the long snappers. Nate Hodel was throwing accurate fast balls. Jake Ingram also had good juice, but had a few that were a bit off target. Hodel looked like the veteran. And Ingram is in for a shock if he makes it to training camp as my guess is his long, blonde, flowing hair won’t make it through July and August uncut. He stands out on the field at this point because the long hair flows out of his helmet. Reminds me of Kevin Greene’s back in the day. Not a good look for a crazy pass-rushing linebacker. Even worse look for a rookie long snapper. Jake, I’d cut it before the veterans get their hands on it in training camp!

–Overall I didn’t think there was a ton to be gained from watching the morning workout. With few key veterans in attendance it was clearly a day of orientation, to some degree a continuation of rookie mini-camp. Things will pick up a little bit next week when the vets join the show. That said I’ll conclude with some guys that earned some points with me on Wednesday morning for various reasons — Crable, Hodel, Taylor (for being there) and Wheatley. A few guys also lost some points with me here in the early goings of the process — Redd, Alex Smith (not as athletic as I expected) and Ingram (one bad snap, even in practice, is one too many in the race to replace Lonie!). But hey, I’m reactionary. And there is still a long ways to go. This time last year was when I fell in love with Redd. But he needs to step it up. He’s not a rookie anymore!

  3. Andy Hart Says:

I wanted to do Hart’s Farts but Paul and Fred won’t let me.

Todd, no, let Andy keep that name “From The Hart”. I liked when I saw it for the first time a few weeks ago. I said to myself,”Good. Thank God Andy chose a phrase that sounds un-super-macho for a change. He’s a bit on the rigid and combative side to begin with, so “From The Hart” balances his John Wayne image nicely. He recently said,”I’ve noticed my son is compassionate. I don’t know where he gets it from.” Lol. Anyway, Andy, thanks for your dedicated blogging work in the off season.

Thanks for the updates! Ingram wasn’t an undrafted free agent by the way.

  8. Paul, London Says:

    @JumboHart :)

Did Banta-Cain take any reps at OLB?

Who was taking the most reps out of Baker and Smith?

And can Sam Aiken hold on to the 4th Receiver spot? The way he was fighting with Wheatley, makes it sound like they are really aiming for higher spots on the roster.

  9. Andy Hart Says:

Good catch, Tony. I guess I’m still trying to grasp the fact that they actually drafted a long snapper.
