Report: Peppers to Pats for 2nd-round pick

Written by Erik Scalavino on March 16, 2009 – 3:09 pm -

NFL.com has just posted a story, citing unnamed NFL sources, that claims the Patriots are poised to make a trade for Carolina defensive end Julius Peppers.

According to the report, New England would send a 2nd-round pick (apparently, the 34th overall, acquired from Kansas City in the Matt Cassel/Mike Vrabel trade) to the Panthers in exchange for Peppers. That would still leave the Pats with two 2nd-round picks (#s 47 and 58 overall).

The report goes on to predict that the trade will be consumated sometime before next month’s NFL Draft. It seems the Panthers are willing to take the 2nd-round choice because it would be less costly than a 1st-rounder, which the market would appear to dictate for a player of Peppers’ ability.

A lot of good news about the Patriots over the past few days!

  2. Pennsylvania Patriot Says:

Yes. I was hoping they would be able to get him. Every time I start to doubt Bill, he pulls me back in!

  3. David Says:

A good lineman that can play linebacker is exacly what the Pats need

  4. Steve Says:

What is the PFW consensus on the move? Obviously Kirsh had a heads up since he made a comment a few weeks ago on the podcast.

  5. Ken Says:

Peppers will probably be a linebacker in their system. At 283 pounds, he’ll be the biggest linebacker in football. The Pats would undoubtedly play him on the strong side. He was a strong-side defensive end in the Carolina 4-3 scheme.

He would fit into the Pats’ scheme much in the role Willie McGinest did. Willie Mac was at the time the biggest linebacker in football. He simply ate up runners coming to the strong side, while providing a pretty good pass rush.

  6. Chris with a tian Says:

BB will have a field day with Peppers and Thomas on the outside!

  7. Will B Says:

Unbelievable. This year is shaping up to be as stocked with star power as the 18-1 team, only with better offensive/defensive balance.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see us go O-Line early. Injuries are pretty much the only thing that could stop this team, (especially if they’re to Brady).

  8. Tyler Says:

Ken, nothing gets by you. Thanks for stating the obvious with he will play 3-4 OLB. I don’t think its ‘undoubtedly’ they will play him on the strong side. AD has way more experience in dropping into coverage, so wouldn’t it make more sense for Peppers to play on the weak-side, and AD over the TE? This way, he cannot be double teamed as much. A 1 on 1 match up with a tackle for Peppers would be a dream. Also, Peppers is not known as a player who is good against the run. If you want to make a comparison, AD is much more similar to McGinest.

  9. Taz Says:

Ken, I never thought about Peppers being like a Willie Mac replacement type guy. Willie wasn’t the best at coverage and Peppers definitely has more potential then him so now I am seeing this as working out because I don’t see Bill paying a guy as much as it is going to cost to only be a 1 dimensional player. He must have a recipe for Peppers. Plus now we will Have Mayo and Pepper as Linebackers. Condiments seem to work well here haha

  10. Paul, London Says:

    I like it.

On a side-note to Erik and Andy, I had a nice conversation with Connor Barwin about 40 minutes ago, check out PFWinProgress.com for the exclusive interview.

Looking forward to the show tomorrow after this =)

Peppers & Thomas on the same D should not be allowed- it’s just not fair on other teams!!! Lol.

The Hooded Lord will run absolute riot over all opposing teams next season.

  12. Keith Henderson Says:

I love this trade. Peppers will be a monster on the defense for the Pats. Plus, New England will still have enough picks in the draft to do some upgrading at many positions. Or trade up and get someone like Curry for the other outside linebacker. It’s very exciting the possabilities.

  13. Taz Says:

ps: i think we should bring back Romeo. The D never has played as well as when he coached it. Would be helpfull with helping Peppers transition to LB from DE

  14. Philip in Nova Scotia Says:

I know there are some concerns about how well Peppers would do in the patriots system, but if Bill wants him, I have to trust that he will do great. And considering the Pats “wasted” second round choices as of late, I say that it would be a bargain. I just hope the high salary cost doesn’t affect us retaining Wilfork. Final thought : Yea-hah!!!

  15. JohnQ Says:

I can’t see this Peppers deal happening. Even if Carolina accepts the 2nd rounder, Peppers is going to have to drastically reduce his 2009 salary and probably beyond to come here. Assuming now one makes more than TB, that puts Peppers in the $12M-14M a year range, which is far less than what he is guaranteed for 2009 and 2010. Not happening.

  16. Jason Says:

I agree JohnQ, unless he is willing to take 6-7 mil a year I don’t see it happening… I’m not going to lose sleep over it though, we can either get Brian Cushing in the draft or Larry English and be just as strong, I think.

  17. Half Price San Francisco 49ers Tickets Says:

I wouldn’t be surprised to see us go O-Line early. Injuries are pretty much the only thing that could stop this team, (especially if they’re to Brady).

  18. Kurt Says:

I was originally on the Peppers bandwagon. But now, I think the Patriots would be much better off with Taylor or through the draft. There are just too many questions about Peppers to warrant what we will be spending on him. Save some dough and park it for signing Wilfork and Seymour next year. Depending on how well we do in the draft, we should be rolling quite well without Peppers.

  19. jason Says:

i think they should get peppers he might be older but heis still the best out there i mean come on with peppers and seymour on the feild at the same time its almost a graenteed sack or 15 yard loss and another 16-0 season just we win the superbowl this time

  20. BRANDON Says:

THE PATS NEED A DEFENSE REAL BAD
