Vontae Davis a Randy Moss fan
Written by Erik Scalavino on February 22, 2009 – 11:19 am -Illinois corner Vontae Davis (5-11, 205) is wrapping up his media interview at Podium 1. Earlier, I asked him to name some of his favorite NFL players, besides his brother (49ers TE Vernon Davis).
The first name he mentioned: Randy Moss.
I then asked him if he could picture himself being drafted by New England and lining up against Moss in practice. He said he certainly could, and would be in shock initially at seeing Moss on the other side of the line of scrimmage, but that eventually, the novelty would wear off and he would take full advantage of the opportunity to learn from Moss.
Davis, an underclassman, appears to be enjoying the whole Combine experience. Either that, or he’s just a naturally happy person. Got a good vibe from Davis, who answered every question with a glowing grin.

Could you see the Pats taking him?

Personally, from what I hear of Davis, he’s immature and cocky, just like his brother. Vernon has all the talent in the world to be a great pass-catching TE, but hasn’t panned out. Even Mike Singletary benched him due to lack of effort. I think Vontae is no different and should not be picked by the Patriots.

I’ve seen Davis play, it was over a year ago but I’ve watched him from the sidelines. I’m not going to sit here and judge him or his family. But I will say this.. Sometimes you lead by example and sometimes you are the example. I think Davis is smart enough to learn by Vernon Davis mistake last season. I mean it wasn’t long till Davis was back on the field hugging Singletary while coming off the field. Vernon Davis does have some wheels on’em, and he is a solid TE, but I think him not panning out has a lot to do with the scheme of the 9ers and with the multiple QB’s throwing to him. Having that said, Moss is a monster and I think it’s very bright of Davis to recognize how good Moss really is. Have you ever just sat back and watch Moss run routes? His upper body always stays forward and his lower body is all over the place. I was fortunate enough to watch practices and games while he was at Marshall. Moss has a great work ethic (if you don’t believe me just goto youtube type “Randy Moss workout”)any man who WANTS to practice against Randy Moss is smart in my eyes. That’s how you get better at your skill.
