Nobody knows more about the draft than Mike Mayock

April 26, 2008

Just ask him. Who does he think he is? Tom Casale? Jordy Nelson at 36? He’ll be out of the league in three years. By the way, get ready for the comparisons to Ed McCaffrey. Or if you’re Erik, Wes Welker.

Here we go again…

April 26, 2008

Donnie Avery the first receiver drafted? I feel like it’s the night before the draft and I’m dreaming about the upcoming day. I’m at a loss for words right now. This makes the Chris Johnson selection look like the best pick of the day.

The Chargers have the best CB in the NFL

April 26, 2008

And no, I’m not talking about Antonio Cromartie. San Diego drafted my boy Antoine Cason with the 27th pick in the draft. I obviously think this is an excellent choice for the Chargers, who need to go through the Colts and Patriots in the AFC. Drafting Cason gives them another good corner and I actually think he could be a starter by the end of the year, with Jammer moving into the slot where he belongs. I’m just glad Cason was drafted in Round 1 because that’s where he deserved to be selected. I will be on the Chargers web site soon ordering my Cason jersey. Powder blue, of course.

Chris Johnson at 24?

April 26, 2008

I’m done. This is my last year of covering the draft. Either I don’t know anything about college prospects anymore or these teams are severely reaching for players. And yes, I know the Cowboys passed on Mendenhall for ANOTHER running back. Is anyone surprised? I like Chris Johnson but at 24? I’m done. This is my last draft. Thank you all for the support over the years but it’s time for me to move on. I’ve lost it.

Mayo ready to make a contribution

April 26, 2008

Just returned from Jerod Mayo’s conference call, and he talked about wanting to make an immediate contribution to the Patriots. He mentioned having in the back of his mind the expectation of being Defensive Rookie of the Year, like Patrick Willis accomplished last year with San Francisco. If he has anywhere near the impact that Willis did for the Niners, this will be one of the best picks of the Bill Belichick era.

Stone cold stunner

April 26, 2008

How can Tennessee not take a wide receiver at this spot when they had their absloute pick of the litter at the position? With no wideouts off the board at all, and Vince Young having less explosiveness at his disposal than the crew of PFW, they don’t take a wideout. I would have just lost a bundle when Limas Sweed didn’t hear his name called.

Chris Johnson may well turn out to be a nice player, but not a first rounder. Wow.

Great value for Dimitroff in Baker

April 26, 2008

Thomas Dimitroff clearly learned about value in his time in New England. He just grabbed OT Sam Baker to protect Matt Ryan. It’s a steal. Had Baker come out last year he probably would have been the second tackle in the first round. He slid this year in many projections, but he’s a future stud. To get a LT and QB in the first round of your first draft is pure genius. I like what Dimitroff is doing down in Atlanta. He’s going in the right direction.

I’m done with the draft

April 26, 2008

As Mel Kiper would say, “I just don’t understand what the draft is all about.” Both the Bears and Lions pass on Rashard Mendenhall for offensive tackles. What good is having guys who can block if you don’t have a quarterback or running back to block for? Then the Ravens trade up for Joe Flacco? Come on. This reminds of the year when they traded with NE to get Kyle Boller in the first round. Flacco may be a decent QB some day but I just don’t see him as a prospect you NEED to trade up and get. And Matt Millen is a walking poster boy for birth control.

Give me more Mayo!

April 26, 2008

I love this pick. Mayo is an animal. I had him rated ahead of Keith Rivers and I think he will become a superstar in New England. The Patriots just got a heck of a lot better at the linebacker position.

Extra Mayo!

April 26, 2008

Much excitement in the makeshift PFW in Progress studio for hte Jerod Mayo pick. Everyone is happy with this selection.

At the Combine, he was one of the first players to say that the Pats had met with him. He has good versatility and quickness. Was a playmaker at Tennessee.
