Giants catching up on their reading

January 29, 2008

As the questions started pouring in on media day, word surfaced about a book being written by The Boston Globe recapping a possible 19-0 season that can be pre-ordered on Amazon.com. Of course, there’s a book about New York winning the Super Bowl that’s available for pre-order as well but in true Patriots-like fashion, Giants players overlooked that fact and used news of the book as motivation.

“I plan on getting the 19-0 book,” linebacker Reggie Torbor said. “I’m going to buy the sequel too. The one where they go 18-1.”

Running back Brandon Jacobs become fiery when a reporter pointed out to him that a book was available about the Patriots going undefeated.

“If people go out and buy that book before this game, they’re going to be pissed off,” Jacobs said. “There will be a lot of disappointed people after the game.”

Uniforms and field

January 29, 2008

For anyone who cares about such details … If you haven’t seen any of the Media Day coverage yet on TV, the Patriots will be wearing their home blue uniforms Sunday. The Giants will be decked in their white road jerseys.

Also, the playing field is normally fully painted by the time Media Day rolls around, but the grounds crew at University of Phoenix Stadium still has some work left to do, it seems. Neither end zone was fully painted, and the yard lines and hash marks looked very faded in most areas. The grass looked in great condition, however, unlike the grass on most people’s lawns out here in Arizona.

Giants Media Day

January 29, 2008

Tom and I stayed to see what was happening at the Giants portion of Media Day, and we’re glad we did.

Driving back afterwards, we were both struck by the same observation: the Giants appeared very loose. They seemed confident and were having a lot of fun with all the goofiness surrounding them. Maybe having played the Pats so close so recently is contributing to that feeling.

Also, there was a rumor floating around that got a lot of the Giants players attention. It was news to me and Tom, and to some of the Giants, too. Tom will be posting a story on patriots.com later with more details and some Giants’ reaction to the rumor, which we’re still trying to confirm.

The monkey got his man

January 29, 2008

Remember that monkey hand puppet that we saw yesterday? Well, as predicted, he was at Media Day, and he left a mark.

The guy operating the puppet snuck up behind OL Billy Yates and tapped him on the shoulder. Yates turned around and laughed, and even stopped to grant them an interview.

The funny part wasn’t the monkey actually being on camera with a microphone, conducting an interview. It was Yates’ refusal to look at the puppet that cracked me up. The TV Axteca guy kept trying to angle the monkey so Yates would look it in the eye while it was talking, but Yates insisted on looking at the man, not the monkey. It was kind of awkward, but that’s what made it funny.

More on Pickler

January 29, 2008

Poor Kellie Pickler had a heck of a time getting players to do what she asked them. For instance, she had this replica Brady jersey that she had adorned with silver frills and sequin stars. None of the players would put it on, despite her protestations.

None, that is, except practice squad TE Jason Rader. He willingly obliged Miss Pickler, who then asked him to don a Joe Dirt-style mullet wig.

He couldn’t put that thing on fast enough.

No respect

January 29, 2008

You’d think that after five trips to the Super Bowl that Tedy Bruschi could at least get his name spelled correctly by the NFL. But that wasn’t the case on Tuesday as he sat at his platform with a nameplate affixed above that read “Tedy Brushci” instead of Bruschi. The linebacker took it in stride though, saying they can call me whatever they want as long as it’s at the Super Bowl.

I’m a creep, and I can admit it

January 29, 2008

Paul didn’t want to include this in his blog about Kellie Pickler, but I have nothing to hide. While Pickler talked with Sammy Morris, Paul and I came up from behind and got our team photographer to snap a photo of us behind the buxom blonde.

Pickler is hot. She is tiny, too. Can’t be more than 5-feet tall. For a guy who is only 5-9, that’s perfect. And it’s good to see she’s put the money she’s made to good use by, ahem, enhancing her body. I think I’m in love with Pickler. And I’ll be telling my wife that when I talk to her later today. I will be printing a copy of the photo of me creeping it up behind Pickler and framing it. Short blondes with large breasts (especially those willing to show them off) are my favorite.

The award goes to…

January 29, 2008

An Entertainment Tonight crew was in the house at Media Day joined by one of the curvy briefcase girls from the “Deal or No Deal” game show. They were giving out awards to various different Patriots players as well as conducting “Red Carpet” interviews.

ET’s Kevin Frazier and said briefcase girl presented Junior Seau with the Susan Lucci Award because it took the daytime actress many years to earn her first Emmy much the way it’s taken Seau 18 years to, if things go as planned, win his first Super Bowl ring. Seau played along with the presentation. But the funny thing was after the ET camera stopped rolling he went to give the award back to Frazier as Seau thought it was just a TV prop. Frazier told him it was his to keep. Seau got a kiss on the cheek from the briefcase girl.

Later on the briefcase girl spent time on the red carpet arm-in-arm with Laurence Maroney and somehow developed a very close, playful relationship with Kyle Bissinger. Not sure how that happened, but I give Bissinger credit for getting it done.

I also saw Bam Childress end an interview with a cute female TV Azteca “journalist” with a kiss on the cheek. I tried to end an interview with Matt Cassel the same way.

Idol Thoughts

January 29, 2008

Media day is less about football and more about entertainment and the Patriots hour-long session provided plenty of the latter. Former “American Idol” finalist Kellie Pickler was on hand “working” for a late night talk show. She was wearing a low-cut Super Bowl T-shirt and caught the eye of many Patriots.

Asante Samuel was one of the featured speakers at his own platform and Pickler made her way to his area. Pickler, speaking with her trademark southern accent, leaned provocatively over the railing to ask Samuel if he had a touchdown dance in mind after he scores against the Giants. When the corner said he hadn’t given it much thought, Pickler offered to demonstrate hers.

Samuel seemed to enjoy the brief routine, as did at least one member of the PFW crew, but I’m guessing the female journalists that looked on in horror weren’t as amused.

Deep Thoughts by Tom Casale

January 29, 2008

There are a ton of hot girls here. My head is spinning. I want to talk to them but I’m a fat, ugly dork. Plus, most of them are over 18-years old.

Donte’ Stallworth stole the show for me. Randy Moss boasted that he was the fastest receiver on the team. When I brought that up to Stallworth, he ran to where Moss was talking and yelled, “You telling lies again? Who’s the fastest receiver on the team?”

Moss replied, “The fastest receiver on the team? I would have to say Randy Moss. The quickest receiver on the Patriots? I would have to say Randy Moss. The strongest receiver on the Patriots? I would have to say Bam Childress. Followed closely by Randy Moss.”

Jabar Gaffney said he was the fastest receiver, followed closely by Stallworth with Moss coming in third. Stallworth laughed at Gaffney’s rankings saying, “Go tell Randy that and see what he says.”

Finally, looking for an unbiased player to tell me who indeed was the fastest receiver on the team, former Texas Tech Red Raider Sammy Morris paused when asked the question and replied, “Wes Welker, Texas Tech.”

You decide.

A couple of other tidbits. Stallworth said he thought offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was a student trainer when he first got here. When McDaniels told Stallworth that he was the OC, Stallworth replied, “Yeah, sure dude. What do you really do?”

When asked who is the greatest receiver of all-time, Moss answered, “It WAS Jerry Rice.”

The Giants are about to start talking so we’ll catch you later.
