I’m Confused

January 22, 2008

I was watching ESPN and they were showing different times when Tom Brady has been injured during his career. They showed the AFC Championship Game against the Steelers when Brady left the game with a knee injury and was replaced by Drew Bledsoe. Then I saw something odd. Despite being hurt, Brady was on the sideline cheering and supporting Bledsoe. I don’t understand. How can a player be hurt and still support his team? Why wasn’t he sitting on the bench all by himself? I don’t get it. I guess I’m just used to watching LaDainian Tomlinson. Wait, according to LT, he was only 50 percent. Perhaps Brady was 60 percent and that extra 10 percent allowed him to be a leader and not quit on his teammates. Yeah, that must be it. At least Tomlinson is a class act. Just ask him.

The Giants safeties could be in for a long day

January 22, 2008

Anyone who follows the Giants knows what the biggest concern surrounding the team is heading into the Super Bowl: the secondary. The Giants secondary has struggled all year long, particularly with a lack of communication. We saw this last week on Brett Favre’s 94-yard touchdown pass to Donald Driver. Corner Corey Webster jammed Driver at the line but once he got past that, there was no safety help over the top because James Butler was late getting over. Patriots fans I’m sure remember the poor play of the New York safeties all game long when the Giants and Pats met back in December.

Problems in the secondary is never a good thing but it’s particularly concerning when facing Tom Brady, Randy Moss and the Patriots high-flying passing attack. If you look at all the game the Giants played against good passing teams (with the lone exception being the Cowboys in the playoffs) the safeties were exploited every single time. Butler has been bad all year, Michael Johnson is a rookie and Gibril Wilson has been injured. Not good news for the Giants.

The other thing the Patriots have in their favor is the weather. It won’t be a factor. Playing on the fast track in Arizona against a Giants defense that gives up a lot of big plays through the air has to have Patriots fans foaming at the mouth. Moss only has two catches this postseason. My guess is he will have a huge Super Bowl and Brady approaches 400 yards passing. You can bet that Bill Belichick is going to test those safeties early and often. Just ask Anthony Smith.
