Uh oh!

August 7, 2007

As Tom Casale would say, “My battery is about to die.” Gotta go. Practice is coming to an end. James Sanders just made another nice play helping break up a pass intended for Reche Caldwell in the end zone. The defense then ended on the strong note with a Mike Vrabel pick of a Tom Brady pass in what was set up as an end-of-game situation. Vrabel held the ball in the air before sliding safely to the turf. I guess he learned from the Chargers mistake.

New No. 38

August 7, 2007

There is a new defensive body on the field for today’s practice. He’s a defensive back wearing No. 38 in blue. According to various published reports he is Dante Wesley, a defensive back who may have been acquired in a trade with the Bears. We’ll have more on the new No. 38 later. So far he’s been spending a lot of time on the sidelines with secondary coach Joel Collier. Obviously, he’s got some catching up to do learning the defense more than a week into training camp.

If it is a trade with the Bears, it will be another in a line of training camp deals between the two teams in recent years. The biggest (see what I did there) came with the addition of nose tackle Ted Washington in camp prior to the 2003 Super Bowl season.

Bruschi pick

August 7, 2007

It came against a scout offense led by Matt Gutierrez, but Tedy Bruschi just recorded an interception from New England’s sub defense. Bruschi cut in front of a short route and ran straight for the end zone.

Gutierrez continued to struggle later in his scout work, throwing another pick to Gemara Williams.

D-line notes

August 7, 2007

With both Richard Seymour and Jarvis Green missing from practice, Mike Wright has handled the reps with the first unit at right defensive end. Looking to the second group, Santanio Thomas is working at right end, Zach West is at the nose and Kenny “Big” Smith is working at left end.

Tough day for D

August 7, 2007

Things just haven’t been going all that way for the defense today. That reached a peak when Matt Cassel fired a short out in Bam Childress’ direction. Ellis Hobbs had the play well covered and the ball hit the corner in the hands. Unfortunately for the defense, the ball deflected off Hobbs’ hands and landed with Childress for the completion. Beyond James Sanders, the D can’t seem to buy a break as practice has continued.

Mills is a machine

August 7, 2007

Ever since Tom Brady yelled at him early in practice, the best-dressed QB in the business can’t stop throwing in the direction of Garrett Mills. The second-year tight end must have caught 10 balls in the last half hour.

Donte’ Stallworth also just made a catch crossing the field in 7 on 7 work. STallworth showed good speed crossing left to right, catching the ball and turning it on down the right side.

And for the second time today, Sammy Morris made a nice catch deep down the sideline. This time he beat Eric Alexander down the left side, extending his arms fully for the grab.

Two-minute

August 7, 2007

As Bill Belichick predicted, we’ve moved on to a little two-minute work. Tom Brady just led a group made up of many second teamers to a 40-plus field goal attempt that was converted by Stephen Gostkowski. The second-year kicker then connected a few mintues later on a 50-plus attempt. So far in camp Gostkowski has been far more accurate on the long attempts than those in the 30-plus range.

He just hit again from 45 yards.

And Reche Caldwell remained hot to set up the kick, beating Ellis Hobbs on a deep in cut with a nice lunging catch. After not showing up early in camp, Caldwell is making his presence known as the team’s. After all, the guy did lead the team in catches a year ago and had a career year, even if all people seem to remember is his performance in Indy.

Pick party

August 7, 2007

James Sanders just came down with the one-handed interception of a Tom Brady pass into the right side of the end zone. Brady was looking for Reche Caldwell on the play from about 35 yards out. Randall Gay helped knocked the ball in the air and Sanders reacted as the ball came down by his left shoulder to make the one-handed pick. Sanders has had a very active afternoon on defense.

Pigeon

August 7, 2007

A pigeon with a death wish was just standing on the field through a full play of practice. AFter the play Eugene Wilson chased the bird away. That’s the insight you only get here at PFW.

Goal line

August 7, 2007

The team work has shifted to the top units doing battle on the goal line. On the fisrt play Tom Brady tried to hit Wes Welker in the slot, but James Sanders broke on the throw to deflect the ball into the air. Brandon Meriweather just missed coming down with the diving interception.

On the second play Brady ran the QB sneek into the end zone and then tossed the ball at safety Rodney Harrison.
