LaMarr Woodley looking good in Pittsburgh

August 5, 2007

As many of you know, OLB LaMarr Woodley (Michigan) was one of my favorite players in this year’s draft. I will be going on record in PFW shortly predicting that Woodley will be this year’s Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2007. This guy was the total package at Michigan. He was a beast rushing the passer, set the edge against the run and really didn’t have one bad performance as a senior (Ask Joe Thomas how good Woodley is because he couldn’t block him). It appears Woodley has outperformed first-round selection Lawrence Timmons so far this offseason and has a good chance to be the opening day starter for the Steelers at outside linebacker.

This was the one player I thought fit the Patriots defense perfectly. Obviously Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli - two guys who know a heck of a lot more about football than I do - disagreed. However, I still think Woodley is going to be a star in this league and I believe the Steelers got a huge break when he slipped to the second round. Watch out for Woodley this year. I think he will have an immediate impact for Pittsburgh as a rookie playing on the edge.

Stallworth speaks

August 5, 2007

Practice wasn’t very interesting but it got more exciting when Donte’ Stallworth spoke to the media following the walkthrough. Stallworth said he didn’t know he was initially put on PUP and that he found out from a friend. When asked if he was off the PUP list now, Stallworth responded, “I suppose so.”

The Patriots new punter

August 5, 2007

Bill Belichick took over punting duties to drop three pooch punts during practice. Actually, it was two punts and another one getting blocked by Larry Izzo. As Izzo ran by Belichick after the block, the coach gave him a playful push.

Colvin getting in some extra work

August 5, 2007

As different units swith in and out on one practice field, Rosevelt Colvin is running some extra sprints by himself on the other field. Numerous Patriots players have taken the time to run extra sprints on their own time during practice this year.

Three-man battle?

August 5, 2007

Wesley Britt is seeing a lot of time at right tackle, lining up next to Stephen Neal. Could Britt be in the mix with Nick Kaczur and Ryan O’Callaghan for the starting job? It should be an interesting preseason at that position.

Billy Yates will make this team

August 5, 2007

According to PFW’s Andy Hart, Billy Yates will make the final roster and could replace Russ Hochstein, who Andy believes could be a surprise cut.

Gostkowski not getting his kicks

August 5, 2007

Stephen Gostkowski is working on long field goal attempts. He missed his first two trys from 48-yards out before connecting on his third attempt. Gostkowski then missed his next two tries from 49 yards. He finished the drill going 1-of-5 from 47 yards and beyond.

Moss Jerseys making the rounds

August 5, 2007

It didn’t take long for the Randy Moss Jerseys to get shipped out. Right now I’m counting three No. 81 jerseys in the crowd. I suspect there will be a lot more in the next week or two.

Nothing

August 5, 2007

Sorry everyone but I have nothing for you. The guys are just walking through basic drills at half speed. That’s about it at this point.

David Thomas not present

August 5, 2007

The only player on PUP not in attendance today is David Thomas. The second-year tight end is the only Patriots player who’s been MIA through the entire training camp so far.

Randy Moss is just hanging out playing catch with Reche caldwell. Chad Jackson is standing next to them watching and all three players are laughing. That’s all I can tell about Moss. Since the players aren’t really doing anything, it’s difficult to tell how bad Moss’ hamstring is, but I would venture a guess that it’s not serious.
