Pats select OT Clint Oldenburg
The Patriots drafted OT Clint Oldenburg out of Colorado State. The amazing thing is Clint’s brother e-mailed in to Ask PFW this week and asked me my thoughts on Oldenburg. While I didn’t think Clint would be drafted, I thought he would be a good pickup for the Patriots as undrafted free agent. Oldenburg is former tight end in the Tom Ashworth mold. He’s 6-5, 300 pounds and a coach’s son. Oldenburg played left tackle, right tackle, guard and tight end in college. A versatile but raw player who could develop in the Patriots system. A definite practice squad candidate. Maybe Clint’s brother knew something we didn’t.

Kyle Brady’s eventual replacement.

We coulda gotten him in 6th or 7th easy, undrafted most likely, and yet we pass up the many dropping LB/DBs to take him? I just don’t understand this anymore.

Wow. Not a bad pick, but it remains inexplicable that the Pats don’t draft a LB. I mean, even if a guy’s lousy for your system, he beats a whole in the depth chart, right?

Great. Like Dante can’t go to the Shaw’s frozen food section and find a guy he can convert into a serviceable lineman. I’ve been dreaming of another OL project the past two days and here we are.

I forget did we not just win 3 SB’s why are we still critical of picks before we see them, Obviously the LBs are falling for a reason…. if other teams don’t even like them, and with BBs high standards of LBs what on this earth makes you think we would like them??????
April 29, 2007 at 2:43 pm
I don’t under stand this. I mean we need to keep our strong positions strong and OL is a strong position, but we need other things. Cornerback, linebacker, safety. We could even use a punter.

I have a guy @ LB for this team. He’s dropped because of character issues- but nhow much does that matter for this squad anymore? Nate Harris, LB, Louisville. Started at Miami but left when they picked up Willie Williams, was a killer @ Louisville- really liked him. Maybe undersized and maybe productive b/c of Okoye but I really think he’s part of the next tier of LBs. Whadda think?

There go Coe and Troy Smith. Maybe we can take Jared Zabransky and Jeff Samardzija next.

I just don’t get it. Are you telling me this guy wouldn’t have been available later on or as an undrafted FA? The Broncos just traded up to grab Rufus Alexander. We could’ve had him or Siler and still gotten Oldenburg later if they wanted.

Tom, you were so right about Dallas… they still have Mason Crosby available and they end up picking Nick Folk(who???) to replace Martin - I cant block anyone - Gramattica…

OMG A LB!!!
April 29, 2007 at 2:58 pm
In the previous post where you asked us who it will be - we should have known better.
Do you think BB & Co. are now just rubbing the NFL’s nose in this draft?

Patriots draft Justin Rogers. No idea on who he is…
April 29, 2007 at 3:03 pm
Anyone heard of Justin Rogers before? 6′4″ 252 lbs, 4.7 dash, looks decent but not projected to be drafted. Would Siler or Bishop have made more sense here? Maybe they were thinking Blades before Washington took him. Is Seau coming back?
April 29, 2007 at 3:06 pm
maybe we are playing on signing Al Wilson????
April 29, 2007 at 3:16 pm
Al Wilson, Ike Hartwell… LAvar Arrington? BB and SP, I have to believe for my own sanity, must have an idea for LB depth
April 29, 2007 at 3:17 pm
How about picking up a #3 QB late in the 6th? At least that would address a need.
April 29, 2007 at 3:22 pm
I use Sporting News website for draft info, and they don’t even have a profile for justin rogers.
April 29, 2007 at 3:25 pm
If anyone listened to BB he has said there are some players that are listed as 3rd or 4th rd prospects some even 2nd that the PAts see as FAs so that is probably what they see with most these LBs
April 29, 2007 at 3:39 pm
Hey guys newbie here from the UK and have been watching the draft all weekend - just an observation, knowing that the Pats need ILBs and potentially DBs, they obviously have a very good reason to be picking up linemen, adding depth at these positions, especially in a team with as many systems as this, cant be bad. But with the pedigree Belichick has in past drafts i don’t think we have much to worry about! Look at the talent signed in the offseason and enjoy the domination next season!

A bit off the point. But i think the patriots should pick running-back Gary Russell with their next pick, which is r6 p28. I think he has to much talent not to be taken even though we do need linebackers. Anyone agree?
