Draft winding down

With their final selection, the Patriots picked Iowa C Mike Elgin. I would love to tell you all about him but after 17 hours or covering the draft, I don’t have the energy to break down a seventh round center who probably won’t make the team. I have to go to Belichick’s press conference and then I’m heading home. I’ll come back later tonight before the Sopranos and give my breakdown of the Patriots entire draft. I’m sure that will be enthralling. Thanks for sticking it out with us, we really appreciate it.

Great job everyone at PFW! A pretty boring draft for the Pats, but you guys did a great job of filling us in about these guys. I’m looking forward to next seasons draft, maybe we’ll actually pick some players people have heard of.

  7. pjd Says:

hey tom and the rest of the PFW guys,
just want to take the time to thank you for your efforts. the pfw radio broadcast and this blog were very entertaining. As for the draft we will have to wait and see how it turns out, it is how to imagine it becoming one of the great bill and scott draft but how knows. thanks again

Salute to Tom Casale. He was spot on, even if Belichick and Co. were not. I have to say, theirs was easily the worst draft I have watched in years. It reminded me of some of the Bill Parcells drafts for Dallas. Skipping too many good prospects to list, then picking up garbage on the cheap AT POSITIONS WHERE THERE IS NO NEED AT ALL. Excuse me? No ILB is inexcusable!!! (What, is there more veteran free agent action to come? What ILB is out there who can replace Bruschi? ) Mark my words, unless they also pay Asante and keep him happy, the gaping holes that the Colts exploited will still be there. Signing Abbate as an undrafted FA is still a possibility. Heck, they could even get Jared Zabransky. But I don’t think they will be that creative.

  9. Craig from Boxborough Says:

We fans appreciate it, Thank You PFW and Jake Steele

Great job Tom. Thanx for all the info and keep up the good work during what seams will be one heck of a season. And, just as curiosity, this is post with most comments from Zurich :)

  11. Kyle C Says:

Man what a bad pick, Harris out of Louisville or the Notre Dame running back (who I think we should have taken over the centrel con. guy) would both have been better picks and would probobly be useful to the team, This guy probobly won’t make the roster.

  12. Matt H. Says:

Hey Tom. It looks like the Pats considered this a weak draft with the trades down and getting next year’s first from SF. I know it’s early but do you have any idea if next year’s draft is expected to be any stronger?

  13. Brady Says:

    Thanks for all the info.

  14. Another Tom Says:

Great job with all of the posts. Considering what picks you had to go with I think you guys did a fantastic couple days work.

  15. Dan Says:

Thanks for the great coverage guys. All the best from London, England.

from a guy on the tip of the vineyard i felt like i was there with you guys. thanks. i’m as bored as you of the draft but love what the Pats did. the anti draft.

  17. tomcasale Says:

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. We did the best we could. The Moss deal was big but draft wise there really wasn’t much to talk about on the Patriots end after Meriweather. However, the Pats are loaded heading into the season and i guess that’s all that matters. The only real concern I see is depth at inside linebacker but let’s not open up that can of worms. Thanks again for all the kind remarks.

Tom, I guess with Seau called on duty, we should not worry for this year. I read from SI that BB loaded with weapons because he want to go with a superbowl win. Most of the choices talk about immediate need than long term. Its not a bad thing to equip our team because we saw our receiving corps were so bad last year against good teams but I think with no young receiver other than chad jackson, no younger LB and Tully banta cain also left, samuel still not signed after this year I guess we are all geared for one last run in 2007 under BB. I hope kraft has a good replacement for the next year.

I missed PFW in Progress live today, when is it going to be put up on iTunes and/or patriots.com? If you can get it up there it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all for everything throughout the entire draft process

  20. Mike G. Says:

Great job on all the postings Tom!
I know you are tired and are looking forward to the Sapranos, so take a well deserved break!

Don’t forget to wake up Fred before you leave!

  21. roger Says:

maybe there saving any leftover money.(if there is any?) to pay samuel.
and the money for all the first day picks next year has to come from somewhere. At least i’m hoping they’ll use them next year but from some of the things i’ve read it is’nt that bad. maybe just more talant we havent heard of .
    THANK ITS HAPPENED BEFORE

  22. mike m Says:

If the Pats come out in a base nickel defense against the Colts, they won’t need as many linebackers :-)

Thanks for the work this weekend. I enjoyed your coverage.

  23. Margy Says:

Don’t count Mike Elgin out. As a Big Ten fan, I can tell you he is hard working and will give you 100%+ every time he is playing. He loves the game, which is evident every time he takes the field. I am torn with the fact that I am a die hard Chicago Bears fan, but the Pats just became my second team. I wish Mike well.
